Periodontal (gum) disease is a degenerative condition that causes inflammation and infection in the gums. There are several stages of gum disease. The first stage is gingivitis, which is a bacterial infection that causes the gums to become swollen, red, and irritated. If left untreated, the bacteria will begin to build up in pockets around the teeth. This more advanced stage is called periodontitis. Eventually, if no preventive or restorative measures are taken, the disease can continue to spread, leading to tooth loss and bone loss.
Gum disease can occur as a result of many factors, including neglected dental hygiene, genetics, smoking and tobacco use, diabetes, certain medications, and pregnancy. While many people do not notice the beginning stages of gum disease, it is important to look out for common signs. If you experience any of the following symptoms, visit your dentist as soon as possible for an exam:
- Red gums
- Gums bleed easily when brushing or flossing
- Inflamed gums
- Loose teeth
Depending on the severity of your condition, there are several treatments that our dentists may recommend. Most treatments involve some sort of deep cleaning to remove bacteria from around the tooth and underneath the gums. More severe cases may require surgical treatments.
