Getting wisdom teeth removed is almost as common as getting braces. Just about everyone will need wisdom teeth removed, just like most everyone needs some sort of orthodontic treatment. Just as with braces, though, there’s a lot of wrong information about wisdom teeth removal.

Today, we want to help make the process clear for you. We believe this will make you more comfortable when it’s time to have your wisdom teeth removed. We hope this also helps clear up the why behind our recommendation to have your wisdom teeth removed.

Why remove them?
You’ll likely have a dentist recommend you for wisdom teeth removal after an x-ray during your regular checkup shows where your wisdom teeth are. Once our dentist looks at the x-rays, they will determine which ones need to come out to keep your smile in good shape.

Most wisdom teeth don’t come in at normal angles. Instead, they come in “impacted.” It’s also common to see them crowd your already-straight teeth out, which means you may need braces again if you don’t get the teeth removed.

The process
Getting wisdom teeth removed isn’t a walk in the park, but it’s hardly the scary surgery it’s often made out to be. It’s quick, and you’ll likely have more to worry about what you’ll say while waking up from surgery than anything else.

You’ll come into Mowry Dental in Fremont, California, where our team will sedate you completely. Then, the wisdom teeth you need to have removed are cut out from your gums. If you don’t take care of those wounds properly, you will end up with a serious infection called dry socket.

There’s a lot of post-op care you’ll need to be aware of, though our team will go through all of it with you.
